Simon Hood: A Portrait of Determination, Innovation, and Success

Early Life and Challenges

Born in Margate in 1984, Simon Hood’s remarkable journey began in humble circumstances as the youngest of four brothers. After tragically losing his father at just five years old, Simon witnessed his mother's incredible resilience and strength. She worked tirelessly, including potato picking, to provide for Simon and his brothers. Early life challenges, such as coping with a speech impediment and enduring bullying during his school years, deeply influenced Simon. Nevertheless, these obstacles fostered his inner determination, sparking a lifelong passion for drama and performing arts that became the foundation of his creativity.

Educational Journey and Early Career

Simon's educational journey was anything but conventional. After failing his A-levels, he turned adversity into opportunity by enrolling in a BTEC course at college while simultaneously holding down a part-time job making popcorn at a local cinema. It was at the cinema that Simon discovered his passion for marketing, thanks to the encouragement and belief shown by a supportive manager. Driven by ambition, he went on to study Marketing at Bournemouth University, a decision influenced as much by its picturesque coastal setting as by academic considerations. To fund his studies, Simon took various unusual marketing roles, including famously dressing as a six-foot shark mascot at a local aquarium a memorable yet valuable experience that further honed his skills in audience engagement.

Early Marketing Triumphs

Simon's marketing prowess became evident early in his career when he joined a street team promoting the indie band The Killers. Despite widespread scepticism about the band's potential, Simon passionately advocated their music, executing grassroots campaigns that eventually propelled the band to global stardom. His successful placement year at HP in Stuttgart was another remarkable milestone. Despite not speaking German, Simon introduced innovative social media strategies, significantly boosting the company's digital presence and setting the stage for future marketing successes.

Entrepreneurship and Industry Success

Following his graduation, Simon quickly distinguished himself as a Marketing Executive at a relocation management company in Basingstoke. Over seven transformative years, Simon not only excelled professionally but also explored his entrepreneurial talents, launching the successful Texas Ask'Em Poker app, which impressively garnered over a million installs worldwide. This period was crucial, laying the groundwork for Simon's unique blend of corporate expertise and entrepreneurial flair.

Community and Charitable Contributions

Simon’s deep commitment to community and charitable causes is as significant as his business achievements. He spearheaded the creation of the Hampshire Cookbook, raising substantial funds for The Prince’s Trust. His passion for philanthropy further manifested in volunteer roles, including supporting BBC's Children in Need production and organising charity football matches with Soccer AM and prominent YouTube personalities. Additionally, Simon displayed his unique community spirit by founding a popular pug-focused dog show and establishing the White Cliffs Business Awards in 2011 to celebrate local entrepreneurial successes.
